TikTok Shop is a built-in ecommerce feature inside the TikTok app that allows users to browse and buy products directly from in-feed videos, live streams, and profile showcases without ever leaving the application

Sellers list products and pay a 6% referral fee per order. Creators tag those products and earn a commission on what they sell. TikTok Shop launched in Indonesia in April 2021 and reached the US in September 2023.

We have run TikTok Shop programs for US brands since March 2024 as a certified TikTok Shop Partner. This guide covers how the marketplace works, who can sell, what it costs, and how to decide whether it fits your business.

How TikTok Shop Works

TikTok Shop puts discovery, research, and checkout in one app. A shopper watches a creator use a product, taps the product tag, and completes the purchase without opening a browser. A sale can happen in four places:

Shoppable Videos

A seller or creator attaches a product tag to a short video. The tag shows the price and opens the product page in the app. This is the format most people mean when they talk about TikTok Shop, and it is where most product discovery happens.

Shoppable LIVEs

A seller or creator adds a product showcase to a live stream and sells during the broadcast. Viewers ask about sizing, ingredients, or fit and get an answer before they buy. LIVE carries the smallest share of US sales of the three content formats.

An affiliate creator generates a product link from their dashboard and shares it in a bio, a direct message, or on another platform. The commission tracks back to that creator when someone buys.

The Shop Tab And Creator Showcase

The Shop tab is a browsable storefront where people search and buy directly. Creators also keep a showcase on their profile listing every product they promote, so a viewer who liked something in a video can find it later.

Which Channel Actually Drives The Sales

The four channels do not carry equal weight, and the balance moved sharply in 2026. Momentum Works reports these shares of attributed US GMV for the first half of 2026:

Channel Share of US GMV
Shop tab 51.4%, up from 36%
Video 40.4%
LIVE 8.2%

Read that as a two-step path. Video does the discovery work. More of the checkouts now finish in the Shop tab, often after the shopper has seen the product in a video first. A seller who only measures in-video conversions will undercount what their creator content produced.

Why Did TikTok Create TikTok Shop?

TikTok created TikTok Shop to earn money from sales it was already driving.

For years, the app sent buyers to other companies. Someone watched a product video, screenshotted it, then bought the item on Amazon or the brand's website. The #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt hashtag has billions of views, and TikTok earned nothing from any of those sales.

TikTok Shop moves the purchase inside the app. The product tag, the checkout, the payment, and the affiliate payout all happen in one place. TikTok takes 6% of each order, and the shopper stays in the feed instead of leaving for another site.

Who Can Sell On TikTok Shop

Sellers and affiliate creators can sell on TikTok Shop. A seller owns the products and an affiliate promotes them for a commission.

Seller

The seller owns the listings, the stock, and the customer relationship. You must be 18 or older, live in the US, and pass identity verification to register as a TikTok Shop seller.

The TikTok Seller Center accepts four registration types: individual, sole proprietorship, corporation, and partnership. An individual seller can register with a personal ID, a tax ID (SSN or ITIN), proof of address, and a personal bank account.

TikTok does not require a business license for individual sellers. A business registers with an EIN and a W-9 that match the name exactly.

Sellers cover inventory, shipping, customer service, refunds, and the referral fee.

Affiliate Creators

Affiliate creators promote products of TikTok Sellers on TikTok and earn a commission on every sale they generate. You must have 1,000 followers and be 18 or older to join as a TikTok Shop affiliate creator in the US.

Creators under 5,000 followers spend their first 30 days in the Creator Pilot Program, which caps how many shoppable videos they can post per day. Learn more about the TikTok Shop affiliate requirements and the account standing rules.

Affiliates don't pay a referral fee, buy inventory, or cover shipping. But if a customer returns the order, they lose the commission from that sale.

How Much Do TikTok Shop Affiliates Earn

TikTok Shop affiliates earn between 5% and 20% commission on each sale. The seller sets the rate, and targeted deals with proven creators run higher. Commission is calculated on the item price after any seller or platform discount.

A creator's earnings depend on how many orders their content drives, the rate the seller sets, and the product price. A 10% rate on a $200 product pays more per order than 25% on a $12 product.

Sellers pay that commission out of their margin. We helped Craftzee maintain affiliate commission at 9.5% against a category norm of 15% to 20%. The brand still reached $125,000 GMV in 30 days at a 27% net margin because we picked creators by category fit and conversion history.

Where TikTok Shop Is Available In 2026

TikTok Shop supports local sellers in roughly 24 markets as of August 2026. Local seller access is separate from Global Selling. A country appearing in a cross-border program does not mean merchants there can register a local shop.

Americas

United States, Mexico, Brazil. The US is the largest TikTok Shop market by GMV worldwide.

Asia

Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Japan. Indonesia was the first market and remains the largest in the region.

Europe

United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Austria, with further EU markets in rollout. TikTok added Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Poland on 15 June 2026 alongside a Sell Across Europe tool.

Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India have no local Seller Center. Check Seller Center for your market before you plan a launch, because the list changes several times a year.

What You Cannot Sell On TikTok Shop

TikTok splits its catalog rules into two policies. One bans products outright. The other allows them once you clear an approval. Check both against your catalog before you register, because a rejected listing costs account health points and repeat violations can end your selling access.

Prohibited Products

The TikTok Prohibited Products Policy bans these outright:

  • Firearms, ammunition, explosives, knives, airsoft guns, and stun guns
  • Drugs and paraphernalia, including CBD oils, THC edibles, and hemp-derived supplements, regardless of state law
  • Alcohol, tobacco, nicotine products, vapes, and smoking equipment
  • Counterfeit goods and anything infringing intellectual property
  • Adult products and sexually explicit content
  • Certain baby and maternity items, including beaded teethers and weighted infant products

The CBD rule catches sellers out most often. State legality makes no difference to the policy.

Restricted Products That Need Approval

The Restricted Products Policy covers products you can sell once you qualify. It runs on three tiers across 16 major categories and 13 specific product types: category-level qualification, product-level qualification per item, and invite-only.

Common restricted categories include beauty and cosmetics, electronics with lithium batteries, precious metal jewelry, supplements, and children's products.

Documentation varies by category. Electronics and children's products need safety and testing certificates. Supplements and food need ingredient and labeling documents. Cosmetics need product compliance files.

You apply through the Qualification Center in Seller Center, under My Account, then Account Settings. TikTok now accepts qualification applications during product listing, so you no longer have to clear it first. Approval is not guaranteed, and TikTok can request more documents after a product is already live.

Invite-only Categories

A small group of formats sits behind a direct invitation from TikTok. Two current examples are Breaks, where a seller opens sealed collectibles during a live stream, and Lucky Scoops, where a customer buys a scoop of unknown items. Sellers without an invitation cannot list, promote, or sell in these categories at all.

What TikTok Shop Costs Sellers In 2026

TikTok Shop is free to register. There is no monthly fee and no listing fee. You pay when an order is completed. You should look out for these 4 fees:

The 6% Referral Fee

TikTok charges US sellers a flat 6% referral fee per order. The formula is 6% × (customer payment + platform discount − tax). Payment processing is included, so there is no separate transaction charge.

Three rates sit outside the 6%:

Situation Rate
Select jewelry categories 5%
New sellers, first 30 days, if a first sale lands within 60 days of onboarding 3%
Collectibles and pre-owned luxury above $10,000 3%

Creator Commission

Commission is usually the largest line in the stack. Most sellers set 5% to 20%, and the rate is yours to set per product or per creator. It is paid on top of the referral fee, on the same order.

Fulfillment And FBT

You can ship yourself or use Fulfilled by TikTok. FBT charges per unit and covers pick, pack, and last-mile delivery:

FBT charge Rate
Multi-unit order, 0 to 4 lb $2.86 per unit
Single-unit order, 0 to 4 lb $3.58 per unit
Storage Free for the first 60 days
Return handling $3.00 flat per order

Returns And The Refund Administration Fee

When an order is refunded, TikTok returns the referral fee to you but keeps a refund administration fee of 20% of that referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU. Sellers also carry a share of return shipping. A returned order also reverses any affiliate commission that was paid on it.

What A Real Order Costs You

Run the arithmetic on your product before you scale. Take a $40 item sold through an affiliate at 15% commission, shipped by FBT in a multi-unit order:

Line Cost
Referral fee (6%) $2.40
Creator commission (15%) $6.00
FBT $2.86
Total platform and creator cost $11.26, or 28% of the order

That figure excludes your cost of goods, the samples you seed to creators, and any ad spend. The 6% headline is real, and it is roughly a fifth of what the order actually costs you. The one line you control directly is commission, which is why it deserves more attention than the fee schedule.

How To Set Up A TikTok Shop

To set up a TikTok Shop as a merchant, go to the TikTok Shop Seller Center, choose your region, sign up with your phone or email, select your business type (individual or corporation), upload your verification documents, and link a bank account for payouts.

Getting approved is the short part. Getting a shop that is listed, stocked, and selling takes longer, and that is where most launches stall. Our TikTok Shop setup service runs the whole build in 30 days.

Register As A Seller In Seller Center

  1. Create a TikTok business account if your brand does not have one. This unlocks the ecommerce features and shop analytics.
  2. Open Seller Center for your market and choose your registration type: individual, sole proprietorship, corporation, or partnership.
  3. Name your shop and enter your business or owner details.
  4. Upload your documents.
  5. Link your TikTok account to the shop so you can tag products in videos and LIVE streams.
  6. Set your affiliate plan.

In the last step, you have three options. An open plan sets one commission across the catalog, and any creator can join. A targeted plan sets a rate for named creators on named products. A shop plan sets a flat rate across everything.

Documents TikTok Asks For

To sell in the US, you need a government ID, proof of address, and a tax document. For your ID, you can use a US passport, a driver's license or state ID, or a permanent resident card. Tax documents are a W-9 with a matching TIN, which can be an EIN for a business or an SSN or ITIN for an individual.

How Long Approval Takes

Most US applications clear document review in 1-3 business days when the details match.

"Match" is strict here. A missing "LLC" between your business license and your bank account is enough to send your file to manual review and add days. Before you submit, check that the name on your ID, bank account, and tax document are the same, character for character.

How To Sign Up As An Affiliate Creator

Creators can apply through TikTok Studio or the Creator Tools menu in the app, then set up a commission account with their name, date of birth, address, and tax details. Review usually takes up to two days. They have to verify their identity after the first commission.

Once approved, a creator can browse the Product Marketplace, request samples, and start tagging products. Our guide on how to become a TikTok Shop affiliate covers the application in detail.

How To Upload A Product To TikTok Shop

Your listing quality decides how much distribution you get on TikTok Shop. TikTok scores every product you upload as Poor, Fair, or Good, and that score controls how often your product shows up in search and recommendation feeds. If you score Poor, fewer shoppers see your product, no matter how good the product.

Check The Product Policy

Read the Prohibited and Restricted product policy of TikTok before you build your listing. If your product falls in a restricted category, apply for qualification through the Qualification Center. You can apply while you list, but applying first saves you a rejected listing.

Title, Category, And Brand Fields

Write your title with the brand, product name, main benefit, and size or net weight. Use the words your buyer would type into search.

Pick the most specific category available to you. Your category decides which searches you show up in and which qualification rules you have to meet. Add your brand and any optional attributes, then write a description that covers materials, sizing, and use.

Image And Video Requirements

TikTok Shop asks for 4 to 9 images per product and recommends at least 5. The listing quality tier caps visibility for products with fewer than 5. So, you should treat 5 as the working minimum.

Specification Requirement
Minimum resolution 600 × 600 px
Recommended resolution 800 × 800 px or higher
Format JPEG or PNG
Maximum file size 5 MB
Aspect ratio 1:1 square, with 3:4 favored for the main image

You should also add a product video. A short demonstration or review clip on the listing gives a shopper the same thing a creator video does.

A Note For Sellers: AI-generated product imagery, including AI models and fabricated scenes, needs a visible AI disclosure label. Undisclosed AI imagery risks reduced distribution or a takedown.

Variations

You should add variation options for color, size, or scent as variants on one listing. Splitting them into separate products costs you the pooled reviews and sales history that feed your ranking.

Shipping And Warranty Details

Fill in package weight and dimensions accurately, because they set the shipping cost and the FBT tier. You should also add warranty and returns information where the category calls for it.

Categories That Need Approval Before You List

Sixteen major categories and thirteen product types need qualification before a listing goes live. This includes beauty, supplements, electronics with lithium batteries, precious metal jewelry, and children's products.

You should gather the documents before you apply. You need:

  • Safety and testing certificates for electronics and children's products
  • Ingredient and labeling files for supplements and food
  • Compliance files for cosmetics

TikTok can ask for more after the product is live, so you should keep them on hand.

How To Promote Your TikTok Shop

Listings do not sell themselves on TikTok Shop. UGC videos from creators generated 40.4% of US GMV in the first half of 2026. TikTok Shop promotions run on four channels, and most brands need at least three of them working together.

Your Own Content

These are posts from your own brand account with your products tagged. Post demonstrations, tutorials, and before-and-after clips. Open with the result so your viewer sees what the product does before they scroll past.

You should also mix product posts with regular content. If every post you publish is shoppable, your feed looks like an ad feed and fewer people watch it.

Affiliate Creator Content

Affiliate creators produce the volume a brand account cannot. They post content, and their followers treat the recommendation as a peer opinion.

You should match creators to your product by category and audience, because a beauty creator promoting a plumbing tool sells nothing. Also, keep the flow of samples steady, since content stops when samples stop. We run this end-to-end through our TikTok Shop affiliate management services, and matchmaking specifically through creator management services.

Free Samples

Open collaboration lets any eligible creator request a free sample from your catalog. You ship the product and the creator posts it.

The creator has a set window to post your product, and the video has to stay public for a minimum time with your product link on it. Nothing forces them to post, but if they skip it, their fulfillment score drops and they lose access to future collaborations.

Free samples are the fastest way to lose money for sellers. You should send product to everyone who asks, and you pay for videos that never sell anything. Ship only to creators who fit your category and have a conversion history.

We helped Craftzee using the same approach. They reached $125,000 in 30 days on our selective seeding. We sent product only to creators with category fit and a conversion history.

Refundable Samples

Refundable sampling moves the cost onto the creator until they post. The creator buys your product at full price, and you refund them once they publish the agreed content. You can also hold the refund until they hit a sales target.

This screens out creators who only want a free product. If a creator will not pay upfront, they usually will not post either.

Shop Ads And GMV Max

Paid ads run on top of the organic content, using creator videos as the creative. Since July 2025, new TikTok Shop campaigns run through GMV Max, which automates targeting and bidding against a target return.

Ads work best once affiliate content is already producing, because GMV Max needs creative to run on. Launching ads before you have creator videos means paying to distribute your own product shots. We help you run ads with TikTok Shop ads management services.

TikTok Shop Pros And Cons For Sellers

Pros Cons
US GMV increased 103% year on year in H1 2026, and UGC videos generated 40.4% of GMV Platform and creator fees can reach 28% of order value on an affiliate sale shipped through Fulfilled by TikTok
No registration, listing, or monthly fees, and a 6% referral fee Local selling is open in roughly 24 markets, and Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India are not among them
Creator recruiting runs inside TikTok, so you pay nothing for a separate outreach platform Sales only hold up while creators keep posting, so you have to keep recruiting month after month

Caution: No seller, agency, or platform can guarantee a viral video or a specific return. Whether a product takes off depends on how many creators are posting it, how fast samples ship, and how consistently content goes out. You should treat a guaranteed-sales or guaranteed-ROI promise as a reason to walk away.

TikTok Shop vs Amazon

You should choose TikTok Shop when your buyers find products by watching someone use them. Choose Amazon when your buyers type a product name into a search box because they have already decided to buy.

Factor TikTok Shop Amazon
Referral Fee 6% most categories 15% most categories, 8% electronics
Demand Type Discovery, unplanned Search, decided
What Sells The Product Creator video Listing, reviews, price
Logistics FBT or self-ship FBA and Prime delivery
Repeat Purchase Weaker Stronger

Beauty and personal care is the largest US TikTok Shop category at roughly 22.5% of GMV, ahead of fashion at 14.8% and health and wellness at 11.2%. Products a creator can demonstrate on camera do best, and the products that need a spec sheet do better on Amazon.

The two channels feed each other. During our Craftzee campaigns, their Amazon search volume increased across the same 30-day window, which is demand TikTok created and Amazon captured. Most brands end up running both.

Is TikTok Shop Right For Your Business?

TikTok Shop fits your business if three things are true: your product shows a visible result on camera, your category is not prohibited, and you can ship samples to creators every week.

It is a poor fit if buyers need weeks to decide, if your margin cannot cover platform and creator costs of up to 28% on affiliate orders, or if you cannot keep posting month after month.

You should drop the assumptions that TikTok Shop only sells cheap impulse buys. Avenlur sells children's furniture at $129, $179, and $519. We helped them go from zero to $156,000 monthly GMV in five months, and never discounted the storefront. High-ticket sales on TikTok work when the product is easy to show working and a creator can film it in a real room.

The second is that the audience is only Gen Z. Momentum Works found that millennials are now the top TikTok Shop buyer group in the US, ahead of Gen Z. If you ruled out TikTok two years ago because of who was buying, that has changed in 2026.

Start Your TikTok Shop With A Certified Partner

We are a certified TikTok Shop Partner and hold all four TikTok partner certifications. We take a shop from registration to their first sales. The Importance of Social Commerce

The global GMV of TikTok Shop reached $50.3 billion in the first half of 2026, up 92% year on year, and Momentum Works projects TikTok Shop will pass $100 billion in global GMV for 2026.

Social selling works differently from search. On a search marketplace, demand already exists, and you compete for it on price and reviews. On TikTok, the content creates the demand. A product nobody was looking for can sell because one creator showed what it does.

That changes where you spend your effort. Listing keywords still help buyers find you in TikTok search, but the bigger driver of sales is how many creators put your product on camera.

What Is TikTok Shop FAQs

How does a TikTok Shop work?

Is it safe to buy off of the TikTok Shop?

Yes, it is safe to buy off of the TikTok Shop. It is a legitimate marketplace with built-in payment encryption and buyer protection policies. However, safety depends on the individual third-party seller.

Why are things so cheap on TikTok Shop?

TikTok Shop offers low prices because TikTok subsidizes major discounts to attract users. Low platform fees and viral video marketing replace expensive advertising, which drives prices down further.

How do I get into TikTok Shop?

To find and open TikTok Shop as a buyer, tap the Shop icon on the bottom navigation menu or top tabs of the TikTok app, or search for products directly in the search bar. If you want to sell items, sign up using the TikTok Shop Seller Center.
