Affiliate marketing and influencer marketing on TikTok Shop differ in how you pay creators. Affiliates earn a commission on each sale and drive direct sales. Influencers earn a fee for their content and reach, and help you build brand awareness.
You should use affiliate marketing for low-risk, trackable sales. Use influencer marketing when you need brand awareness or polished content. On TikTok Shop, the strongest results usually come from running both.
As a TikTok Shop Partner (TSP) agency, we run both deal types every week with 2,300+ creators. Below, we compare the two models on pay, purpose, and tracking. Then we show how real TikTok Shop brands combined them.

How You Pay Affiliates And Influencers
You pay affiliates a commission only when they make a sale. Influencers are paid for the content they create, whether it sells or not.
Affiliate Marketing: Commission Per Sale
Affiliates earn a commission on the sales they generate through their videos, LIVEs, or affiliate link. You set the rate in Seller Center. According to TikTok Shop Seller University, it can range from 1% to 80%. Most sellers set 5% to 20%.
The TikTok Shop affiliate program gives you two plans to choose who can promote your products:
- Open Plan (Open Collaboration): Any eligible creator can find your product in the Product Marketplace and promote it at your listed rate. You can turn on approval to choose which creators join.
- Target Plan (Target Collaboration): Only creators you invite can promote it, usually at a higher rate for creators with a proven sales history.
You pay the commission on top of the TikTok Shop 6% referral fee, on the same order. If your margin can't cover the rate you set, you lose money on every affiliate sale.
Influencer Marketing: Pay For Content
You pay influencers a flat fee for each video. The cost remains the same no matter if the video generates any sales or not. TikTok Shop supports this through flat fee collaborations. You can set a fee from $20 to $10,000 per video and add commission on top.
When you send the invite, TikTok holds your payment. The creator gets paid after you approve the video. If a creator charges more than $10,000, you pay them through your own contract outside TikTok Shop.
Creators with more followers charge higher fees. But their follower count doesn't tell you how much they will sell. In May 2026, we matched Wyze with a creator who had 9,000 followers and generated $98,500 in sales for them. In the same month, we matched Medicube with a creator who had 698,100 followers but could only generate $12,800 in sales.
The right creator can bring you more sales, and that’s where our TikTok Shop Creator Matchmaking services can help you out.
When To Use Affiliate Vs Influencer Marketing
Affiliates can help you make the most out of the products that already have demand. If your product is new, influencers can get people interested in it.
Affiliate Marketing Drives Sales
Affiliates earn money only when someone buys through their video, LIVE, or link. So every video they make is made to sell your product. They also post more often for products that sell well, and that brings you more orders each month. That is how we helped COCOL go from $0 to $132,000 in monthly GMV in 4 months using affiliate marketing only.
Influencer Marketing Builds Awareness
Influencers have a following that trusts their recommendations, and they can introduce your brand to them. You approve the video before it goes live, so it explains your product the way you want. This helps when you enter a new category or sell a product that buyers don't understand yet.
A paid video can reach millions of people in a short time. For example, we matched CINCOM with a creator who had 15,700 followers, and their video got 42.7 million views and generated $124,000 in sales in under 30 days.
How To Track Affiliate And Influencer Marketing
Tracking Affiliate Marketing
TikTok Shop tracks every affiliate sale for you. In Affiliate Center, the Performance tab shows your affiliate GMV, orders, and items sold. You can also see the creators, products, videos, and LIVEs that made those sales.
To check one creator, open their Creator Collaboration Details. It shows their GMV, every video they posted, and how each video performed. Use this to decide which creators get your next samples.
Affiliate marketing is low risk because you only lose the cost of the sample if a creator makes no sales.
Tracking Influencer Marketing
You can track influencer marketing (paid videos) through Analytics in Seller Center. Go to LIVE & Video > Videos Performance and open the video to see its views, likes, comments, shares, and GMV.
Seller Center only shows sales made on TikTok Shop. A paid video can also increase your searches, followers, and sales on other channels. For one of our clients (Craftzee), Amazon searches went up while our TikTok creators were posting about their brand.
To find out if a paid video increased your sales on Amazon or your website, compare sales on those channels from before and after the creator posted the video.
How Affiliate and Influencer Marketing Overlap on TikTok Shop
On TikTok Shop, one creator can work with you as both an affiliate and an influencer. Many creators start as affiliates and only get paid commission on their sales. Once they have a record of sales, they start charging a flat fee, or a smaller fee plus commission.
If one of your affiliates asks for a flat fee, check their past sales in Affiliate Center before you agree to pay it.
How To Run Affiliate And Influencer Marketing Together
Start With Influencer Marketing
You should start with influencer marketing if your shop or product has no sales yet. Affiliates rarely promote products with no sales history, because they have no proof that the product will sell.
Influencers will post about your product before it has any sales, because you pay them for the video. Their videos bring your first sales, and that sales history gets affiliates interested in your product.
Avenlur was a new brand on TikTok Shop with no sales history. We paid influencers $20 to $30 per video, in packages of 7 to 10 videos, to get its first videos and sales.
Switch To Affiliate Marketing Once Products Sell
Once your product has a sales history, switch to affiliate marketing. Affiliates will see that your product sells and will promote your product for a commission. Many of the influencers you paid will also keep posting for commission.
Avenlur moved its creators to commission only after 3 months, and we helped its shop reach $156,000 in monthly GMV within 5 months, achieving a 4x ROI.
Send Samples To Proven Affiliates
After you switch to affiliate marketing, send samples to proven affiliates only. Since you pay for the samples, send video ideas with each one to get the best results. With these ideas, one affiliate can post several videos from a single sample.
For L.O.C Astrology, we shipped 5 to 7 samples a day and got back 50 to 70 videos a day. This strategy generated $445,178 in GMV in 28 days for their apparel brand.
Pay Influencers Who Already Sell
When you pick influencer marketing, choose influencers with a proven record of sales, even if they have small followings. Their past sales show they can generate sales. We matched Wyze with three influencers who had 5,000 to 12,000 followers, and together they generated over $150,000 in GMV in May 2026.
Disclosure Rules For Affiliates And Influencers
Affiliates and influencers follow the same disclosure rules. The FTC guide for social media influencers says creators must disclose any relationship with a brand. That includes payment, commission, and free products. Creators should also put the disclosure in the video itself, using simple words like “ad” or “sponsored.”
TikTok also has its own rule. Under the TikTok Branded Content Policy, creators must turn on the commercial content disclosure setting for paid videos, gifted products, and products they earn commission on. This adds a “Paid partnership” label to the video. If a creator doesn't turn it on, TikTok may not show the video in the For You feed.
You should add these rules to every creator brief and agreement, for both affiliates and influencers.

Affiliate Marketing vs Influencer Marketing FAQs
What is affiliate marketing on TikTok?

Which affiliate is best for beginners?
For beginners on TikTok, the TikTok Shop affiliate program is the easiest to start because you don't hold inventory or pay platform fees. To join, you need to meet the TikTok Shop affiliate requirements: be 18 or older, live in the US, and have at least 1,000 followers.
Can an influencer also be an affiliate?
Yes, an influencer can also be an affiliate on TikTok Shop. The influencer has to join the TikTok Shop affiliate program, after which they can promote products for a commission while still taking paid deals from brands.
